A long travel day tests your routine. The gate changes, the layover runs long, and the only thing open at 10pm is a vending machine. For those of us who care how we feel when we land, a little planning goes a long way.
I've learned to pack a small kit that keeps things simple. Just a few items to fit in my carry on, one pouch to carry with me while walking, and I'm covered from the curb to the hotel room.
After Security: Fill Up and Mix In
I carry an empty bottle through security and fill it at the first fountain I find. Then I add a packet of Ultima Replenisher Original Variety Electrolyte Packets. It comes in individual packets, it's low sugar, caffeine-free. It is clean hydration without the caffeine boost, and the flavor makes plain airport water feel like a treat. Just pour the contents in the pouch in cold water, preferably with ice!
At The Gate: Something Real to Eat
When the gate is crowded and the food court line is long, I reach for the kit instead.
RXBAR Protein Bars, 3-Flavor Variety Pack is my anchor. Each bar has 12g of protein and a short, readable ingredient list, and it packs flat in a carry-on. The variety pack means I'm not stuck with one flavor on a long trip. My favorite is the Chocolate Sea Salt, it’s something about the taste combo. If you have nut allergies, you can try the No Nuts! Caramel Mocha Protein Bars Nut-Free to play it safe.
When I want something that feels more like a snack, I add a Justin's Honey Peanut Butter Squeeze Pack. Each pack is a single portion, shelf-stable, and mess-free. I squeeze it straight from the pouch, or onto an apple or a slice of toast from the café. The packs are small, but peanut butter counts as a liquid or gel under TSA rules, so check their current guidance and keep them in your quart bag.
Staying Hydrated
Cabin air and hotel air conditioning are both dry, and I notice it. I carry a reusable bottle and fill it after security. When I want something more than plain water, I add electrolyte packets. I like the HydroMATE Electrolyte Powder Peach Tea Hydration Packets. They're low in sugar and make plain water easier to drink on a long travel day.
The Ritual That Travels: Espresso Anywhere
Hotel coffee is a gamble, and airport coffee lines are worse. I keep 365 by Whole Foods Market Instant Espresso, Dark Roast single-serve sticks in my bag. All I need is hot water, which any café, gate-side shop, or hotel kettle can provide. I love the dark roast flavor, especially in the morning because it keeps me energetic and alert throughout those long walks to and from the airports.
It's a small thing, but starting a morning with a drink I chose myself makes an unfamiliar room feel a bit more like mine.
Winding Down
New beds and unfamiliar noise make it hard to settle in. These are the comfort items that help me feel at home:
How I Pack It All
MIER Small Freezable Snack Bags Frozen Mini Cooler with 2 Gel Packs is a lunch box with reusable ice packs. Perfect if you are carrying drink bottles or cans with your snacks.
The Takeaway
Good hospitality is attention to small details, and those details can travel with you. A few thoughtfully chosen things in your bag can turn a hurried travel day into one that feels a little more cared for.
What's always in your carry-on?
